Hi, my name is Glenda, I’m 28, and I’m from Guatemala. I moved to New York three years ago and in summer 2024 I had the fortune of joining the Mi Casita team. Through expressing my interests and roots with the mi Centro BK team, I found the path to sharing this knowledge and experience with you.
Since childhood I’ve been surrounded by the rich traditional attire of my indigenous community, which has always been an expression of identity and culture. My interest in sewing began at 8 years old, when I saw my neighbors carefully working on their pieces. With curiosity and enthusiasm I asked them to teach me, and thus started my journey with this art.
Years later, when I got married, I discovered that my husband’s family also had a strong link to sewing and textiles. It was then that I asked my mother-in-law to teach me to craft Güipiles, fajas, and other elements of our community’s traditional clothing. Learning through her allowed me to hone my abilities and connect even deeper with my cultural roots.
Today sewing remains a passion that I cultivate in my free time. It’s more than a hobby: it’s a way to honor my heritage and express my love for our culture.
